Grenadian chef wins top honours during Caribbean Week New York

(St. George’s, Grenada) 13th June 2017— Who is Yvette Michelle LaCrette and how has she made us in Grenada so proud of her achievements? Well this lady can cook using Grenada’s natural ingredients and with her food you can taste why Grenada is known as Pure Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean.

We met Yvette at the CTO Caribbean Week fundraiser and auction event called Rum & Rhythm. It is an incredible epicurean experience held every year. Caribbean people come out in their numbers to taste the delicious food and the fine drinks. On entering, one gets a gold coin to drop in the box at the booth of your favourite Chef and we knew before the votes were counted that Chef Yvette was the ‘People’s Choice’ judging by the lines of people waiting all night for her amazing food.

On the menu was stewed callaloo, mashed breadfruit and curried goat. Now if someone had said we would eat curried goat in a culinary competition we would have been surprised. But Chef Yvette elevated the dish to a delicacy and we devoured every mouthful. It is no wonder that supermodel, Naomi Campbell retained the services of Chef Yvette for more than fifteen years.

Her personality shone through all night as she merrily served the happy patrons with her food infused with Grenada spices and her smile bright like a diamond. She topped off the dish with a dessert made from Cou Cou, which is not a common dessert ingredient, but it was transformed into a delicious, tasty after course.

The venue Capitale, with its high vaulted ceilings was perfect to savour the delights of Caribbean food in the Chinatown Oasis of New York City. The music was pulsating with West Indian rhythms and everyone danced by our Pure Grenada booth. It was a great night to represent Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and to top it all off, Chef Yvette was declared the Celebrity Chef of the Year and also won the People’s Choice Award at the end of the night.

Melissa Noel from Caribbean Beat called her Grenada’s Ambassador of Spices and wrote an award-winning piece on her time with Chef Yvette in Grenada. She represents Grenada and the wider Caribbean well and everyone at home and abroad should know our star girl. Thanks to Yvette Michelle LaCrette visitors will seek out Pure Grenada for their next culinary vacation.
